Former Liberal Democrat Councillor for Knaphill Learn more

In my time a Vice President of the International Federation of Liberal Youth I was fortunate to meet some Burmese Liberal Political activists and was inspired by their every effort. This week I was proud that we have Liberal Democrat ministers in government who can act for Burma when I heard that Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg had received a photographic petition made up of more than five thousand photographs of Amnesty activists, politicians and famous faces.
Mr Clegg, Desmond Tutu, Christopher Eccleston and Jeremy Browne are among those photographed with raised palms inscribed with the names of Burmese political prisoners to raise awareness of their plight.
Nick said: “The Burmese regime’s treatment of its people and denial of (take out basic) rights like freedom of expression is deplorable. This Government will not rest until Htay Kywe and other political prisoners like him are free.”
