Elected representatives on the make bring politics into disrepute

by admin on 11 April, 2009

There has been scandal after scandal in British politics for as long as I can remember.  It was the Tory party in the early 1990s and then Labour from ’97 onwards. First with donors such as Bernie Ecclestone securing delays in the ban on Tobacco advertising, cash for honours and members of the Lords being investigated for soliciting money to name a few.  Throughout each scandal it is amazing how many of our representatives succeed in keeping so many skeletons in their closets.

The latest scandal involving MPs expenses is shocking.  Not least because it appears to have been going on so long and so few of those who are guilty of it, see it is wrong because it is permitted in the rules.  Nick Clegg was right when he suggested that MPs should be forced to sell the properties that they are in effect having purchased for them by the tax payer.  See more on this story here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6062719.ece  It is time we have a truly transparent system of expenses and members’ interests together with a political system which enables people to remove in elections politicians who all too often feel far too safe in their seats due to our outdated electoral system.
